Spacious, modern and functional, the Modern Wing makes great use of natural light in exhibition areas - a rarity in art museums. With the wing's opening in 2009, The Art Institute greatly expanded display of its Modern and Contemporary Art collection. However, the actual exhibition space is smaller than one might expect looking at the new wing from the outside - the central atrium makes for a grand first impression but takes up too much of a precious footprint.
