The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

4.2 based on 17 ratings

Director: Peter Jackson
Release Date: 01/2001
Runtime: 178 minutes
Also Known as: The Fellowship of the Ring

Description: From the idyllic shire of the Hobbits to the smoking chasms of Mordor, director Peter Jackson has created a world that surpasses the expectations of J.R.R. Tolkien purists as Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) embarks on his epic quest to destroy the ring of Sauron. The movie -- which nabbed 13 Oscar nominations -- is superbly cast with actors such as Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), and stays remarkably true to the book.

Fantasy is a touchy thing for Hollywood. Anytime there's swords and goblins involved, the results are usually dicey, at best (see "Dungeons and Dragons," "Dragon Slayer," "Beast Master," "Eragon," "Conan the Destroyer"... I can go on), but Peter Jackson's film rises above the source material to create an epic that is mythical and inspiring, while staying rooted in accessible characters and relatable motivations. Not the best of the trilogy, but set the stage for a classic franchise while remaining a pretty bang-up movie on its own.

The only sequel that progresses from one movie to other. The Fellowship of the Ring is the perfect beginning for an awesome three part movie of this classic. Perfect cast, amazing story line and a powerful ensemble of characters where Orlando Bloom became a star! An official classic for the modern generation in my opinion.
