Russell Crowe's ticket to Hollywood immortality, Gladiator is Ridley Scott's best movie of the decade. The opening scene - a battle between the Roman army and a barbarian horde - is arguably one of the most impressive large-scale battle scenes ever shot in Hollywood (think first 15 min of Saving Private Ryan - only with mud, snow, 2nd century AD technology and a much more pitcturesque Germanic adversary). Afterwards, the story often drags and anachronisms abound, but Crowe's magnetic screen presence and a few bone-chilling fight scenes make it all worth it at the end.

One of the most overrated action flicks, which propelled another generation of silly "historical" movies to the front lines of Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, I am not against artfully done fiction, even if it has nothing to do with history. What I don't get is when rich historical material is ignored in favor of stupid plot and absurd action. That said, commercial and critical success of the Gladiator clearly shows that the formula worked for the majority of viewers.

I totally agree! At last someone said the truth about this movie! When I say like that everyone starts snapping fingers on me saying I'm insane because I don't appreciate the amenities of the best movie ever!)

Thank you. I made a double mistake of watching it with my dad, which only proved his worst (ungrounded) feelings toward any modern movies.

How can I not have a review for this movie? This will certainly go down as one of my favorite period films, though am always biased to such type of movies. The opening scene for the Gladiator prepares you for the bloody action ahead, putting in context what is to come in this adrenaline-packed movie that is blended with some rich history. It's never dragging and had authentic fierceness in the fighting scenes; definitely a must-see.
