Overdone. Or underdone. Whatever. Not for me.

What is overdone here? Human stupidity or randomness? Ohh... come on... not 2 stars... I am disappointed

I am disappointed too. If this was coming not from Coens (from whom I expect style and intelligence) I probably would not bother to watch it. The stellar cast is wasted (especially Clooney and Pitt), the plot is flat and overall the film is too dumb to be funny. Many other Coens works are either powerful or charming (not all). This one is a repulsive mess. I think I was wrong in my qualification above. The film is not overdone (I meant this in terms of quirkiness) – it is underdone (as a Coens product from which you expect absolute quality in all respects).

Comment by Alex Pavlovitch almost 2 years ago

I respectfully disagree. This is probably best Pitt's performance. You need raw talent to play such a realistic idiot. Clooney's role is easy—playing himself in a way, Malkovich, McDormand and others are amazing. I think your quest for "intelligence" is misdirected... there is little intelligence in life, mostly randomness, emotions and stupidity.

Comment by Alan Sipols almost 2 years ago

That idiot is not realistic coming from Pitt. Not even a fraction as convincing and likeable as in say Snatch. The whole thing is just boringly stupid and has nothing to do with life.

can name a bunch individual things that are brilliant (Malkovich's and Pitt's characters, for example), but the film as a whole did not touch me as profoundly, as the Big Lebowski did.

Somehow movies is the subject where our tastes only occasionally match. I love this film.

The first time I watched it--I laughed, the second time--I cried. Brilliant cast. Brad Pitt is so believably dumb:)

The brothers outdid themselves bringing human idiocy to the light. Kudos to all the actors. Pitt was a big surprise showing his talent of a comic actor. Maybe some punches went below the belt...but look again who they are punching!

This is movie is splendid. Hilarious characters mixed in the stupidity and randomness of life. Elegant and humorous display of vain human attempts to make sense out of it, perpetual failure to predict outcomes and incomprehensible complexity of cause and effect. Brad Pitt's portrait of an idiotic personal trainer and Malkovich's grumpy ex-CIA agent are just too much to miss.

so-so for my taste. for a comedy - too realistic :) for a reenactment play - too comic... something in between. Dealing with idots is a part of life, I don't need to be reminded of it.

Well, I guess I am in minority on this one.

No, honey, I'm with you on this one. I loved it.

Another great Coen Brothers movie, not as classic as 'No Country for Old Men' but it still finds time to shine. It is a star studded cast and they do not disappoint.

I felt like this movie should have been funnier than it actually was. It had all the right players, suitable timing and a kooky plot to boot. Yet it's that kind of funny that doesn't quiet make you laugh even though you are certain that you are amused.

I found the characters too unlikeable to really care about anyone. Still, liked it well enough.
