This is not a movie. A new art form has finally been created. The end of Holywood blockbuster as we know it. Special effects rule. This one will not be matched though by most of the drivel that the studio execs will follow up to exploit the "new gengre".

When a top Hollywood director has unlimited resources and access to all the best talent in tech--you get a visually pleasing result. I still don't get how people actually liked the movie. I got enough of the visuals (which were beautiful, I admit), but the story is primitive, boring and so cliche.

This is a future of the cinematography. I can't even imagine watching flat (2D) movies anymore. Unfortunately it costs more, because of the designer glasses you are given, but I'm ready to pay extra for watching such amazing effects! I was amazed how my attitude towards the green giants was transforming from disgust to sympathy during the movie.

I was not surprised when hyped up general public praised Avatar. But when it received close to five stars from my close friends I got puzzled. Are you guys nuts? This boring, stupid film—5 stars? Ok, 5 stars for special effects for sure. Top notch team, top budget, top results. But otherwise, this movie deserves 2. Well may be another 5 for massive marketing campaign and brainwashing.

Ok, public it is then. When there is a multi-rating option which lets you rate the intellectual and the aesthetic pleasure independently of each other, the marks won’t be all 5. You do not expect philosophical satisfaction from everything in the world. You kite-surf for the fun of it and you watch Avatar for stunning visual experience. The reason for the 5 star rating was explicitly stated in the reviews and there was no single word implying the ratings should or could be interpreted otherwise. So, give us a break. Over time, the rating will be inevitably revised but for now it is 5.

Comment by Alex Pavlovitch almost 2 years ago

This is B/S. Any work of art is assessed on multiple levels. To rate this crap 5 your visual greatness should overwhelm stupid plot, flat characters and so on. In my eyes it does not. Extending your logic you'll rate a movie 5 stars if lead actor was stunning, even if everything else was garbage. Overall, it is such a boring, stupid movie.

Vlad, I see your point, but don't buy "new form of entertainment". This is gradual evolution (with huge budget) of things which were done before and better. If anything Pixar should be credited for the new form.

Comment by Alan Sipols almost 2 years ago

Some observations based on Dr Pavlo’s aggressive stance on Avatar: Public bullying is futile and counter-productive. Anyone has a right to respectfully disagree - personal tastes are just that, personal. There are many stupid things smart people enjoy, knowing full well they are stupid. E pur si muove, Avatar is a 5-star piece of visual entertainment.

A beautiful rendering of a terribly hackneyed and mildly offensive story.

I actually liked the movie a lot. I think it was done well, effects were great, I found it very entertaining (I didn’t feel like it was 3 hours long.) I would go and see it again!

I give this incredible eye candy 4 stars, because it just so incredibly good looking. By the end of the movie I was wishing I was blue with a tail. 3D was awesome by the way. Other than special effects, the story is extremely predictable. But you don't go to see Avatar if you like complicated plots, you see it for one reason - special effects.

Derivative, over-hyped and under-written. The special effects are amazing, but once their statement is made, we're left with a cheesy bad-guy, familiar "corporations are evil" message and a love-story that was done better in "Dances With Wolves," shorter in "Pocahontas" and with-Ton-Loc in "Ferngully."

Too predictable - script borowed from Fenimore Cooper novels - if not for J Cameron patented "awe" factor - would not even get a half a star.

James Cameron created an amazing world. The plot could be a little less predictable, but it is not what you see this movie for.

Some said the story wasn't great but I thought of it almost as 'Dances With Wolves' goes to outer space. I had no trouble with the story. What got me was the aliens could really be related too, believable and fascinating. Effects, of course, were sensational. To me, in a very real way, this was a benchmark, like going from silent to sound. Movies won't be made the same way after this. I hadn't expected to like it that much, maybe 'cause I'm an old guy who has seen 'everything' twice. Excellent. Cameron is incredible in vision and skill.

This movies defines where art, culture and technology meet together, to make a truly epic experience. With a compelling story line, and a unique mix of characters, it makes it one the best movies ive ever seen. Its is sure to be a lasting legacy, for the director, James Cameron.

I loved Avatar, but I don't believe its as good as a movie as some people made it out to be. It was a good movie; the effects were great, the storyline was interesting, and the characters were intriguing, but i don't believe it was the greatest movie of the year in the least. But it is a great movie, and i would definitely suggest watching it at least once.

you know, i really insisted upon hating this movie and i was pretty disappointed to find that once i watched it, i didn't hate it at all. sure, the story was pocahantas in outerspace, and a little trite or cliche or whatever blahblah. but i still agree enough with the message that i was totally seduced by the premise and visuals alone. even the story is like a dances with wolves game on a souped up wii.

This movie had great detail in it's graphics. The story was good, but it really reminded me of Pocahontas. I liked the cinematography of the film because of the locations. Some parts were cheesy but over all a very good film for most of the family, they did not have to go there for the sex scene.

Yeah. Lets make dances with wolves in the future, but even though we have hyperspace and advanced genetics we fight in small helicopters with guns, sure, we'd smoke those natives now, let alone in a 100 years- sure, maybe the surgery is expensive to repair one's legs, but wheelchair technology hasn't changed at all? Can't suspend my disbelief that far, screw this movie

Pure awesomeness. You give James Cameron $300,000, and it's not thrown away! It's basically Dances With Wolves (another classic) with aliens.

Avatar is "the film that should've been, could've been". The visual effects are, indeed, brilliant, at least when seen in the intended 3-D. They are also the film's greatest weakness, in that they seem to be all that the movie relies on at all. The plot itself is a fairly standard sci-fi retread of older, better movies, held back by characters that I had hoped we left behind in the 90s. The movie is incredibly cynical, and full of enough plot holes that the entire planet of Pandora could fit through them. Avatar is by no means a bad movie, but it is a movie that had an amazing director, excellent actors, and an utterly ridiculous budget, and the only thing about it that stands out at all is its visual effects. A disappointment, whose only justification for its budget is that now the technology Avatar popularized can be used to make better movies.
